Alaska Pilot Car Regulations

Guidelines for Alaska pilot car, escort car, and flag car regulations. Always confirm current requirements with the permit office.

Requirements for Load

  • Flags (16”x16” red or fluorescent orange) required on Vehicles with Load more than 10’ wide and overhang exceeding legal limits
  • Signs required on front and rear on loads over 8’6” wide and printed with the word(s) “OVERSIZE”, “OVERSIZE LOAD” OR “WIDE LOAD”
  • Signs shall be minimum of 48” wide, yellow background with black lettering 10” high and 2” brush stroke.

Requirements for Pilot/Escort Vehicle

  • Passenger car or truck cannot exceed unladen weight of 19,000 lbs.; Not less than 60” wide.
  • Vehicles must carry a red hand flag and bright orange safety vest or jacket.
  • Signs required on front and rear on loads over 8’6” wide and printed with the word(s) “OVERSIZE”, “OVERSIZE LOAD” OR “WIDE LOAD”
  • Signs shall be a minimum of 48” wide, yellow background with black lettering 10” high and 2” brush stroke.
  • Signs on escort vehicle will be mounted on the front of lead vehicleand on the rear of rear vehicle. Commercial vehicle insurance.

Requirements for Pilot/Escort per crewmember

  • Highly reflectorized jacket or vest
  • 18” or 24” stop/slow paddle sign
  • Flashlight w/ red cone or lighted wand & extra batteries
  • 1-5lb B:C fire extinguisher
  • 3 bi-directional emergency retroreflective triangles
  • Operable CB radio (company radios are acceptable)
